Tips for Handling Unexpected Changes in Your Birth Plan
Pregnancy is full of surprises—and not all of them come wrapped in tiny booties or delivered via baby showers. While most of us dream of a smooth, textbook-perfect birth, the reality is that unexpected changes can happen. But don’t worry! With a little preparation and the right mindset, you can handle whatever comes your way like the superstar mum-to-be you are.
As your guide for anything birth & baby here in Auckland, I’ve helped hundreds of women through pregnancy, birth, and beyond. Let me share my top tips for staying calm and in control when your birth plan takes a detour.
1. Understand That Birth Plans Are Guides, Not Guarantees
Your birth plan is a fantastic way to communicate your preferences, from pain relief options to the music you want playing during labour. But remember, it’s called a “plan” for a reason—it’s not set in stone. Birth is unpredictable, and flexibility is your best friend.
💡 Pro Tip: When creating your birth plan, think of it as a wishlist rather than a rigid checklist. Focus on the things that matter most to you, like feeling safe, supported, and informed.
2. Stay Informed About Your Options
Knowledge is power! When you understand the possibilities—like what happens during a C-section or how to navigate an induction—you’ll feel more confident making decisions if the unexpected arises.
In my Antenatal Classes in Auckland, we cover the what-ifs so you’ll never feel blindsided. From interventions to natural coping techniques, you’ll be prepared for any curveball birth might throw at you. We also provide a online video course for our parents to continue their learning so the feel empowered and excited for birth.
💡 Pro Tip: If you are not booked in with me, this is something you SHOULD be learning with your provider!!
3. Trust Your Birth Team
Whether it’s your midwife, OB, or partner, your birth team is there to support you every step of the way. If plans change, lean on their expertise and communicate openly about how you’re feeling. Ask them to explain things clearly, what are your options, are you using BRAIN...?
💡 Pro Tip: Build a strong connection with your birth team early. Ask questions, express your concerns, and ensure you’re on the same page before the big day. Use BRAIN to navigate those decisions so you feel informed and in control.
4. Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques
When things don’t go as planned, it’s easy to spiral into stress, and we know thats .not helpful in birth That’s where mindfulness and relaxation come in. Techniques like deep breathing, visualization, and even a quick grounding exercise can help you stay calm and focused.
💡 Pro Tip: Join one of my Hypnobirthing classes in Auckland to learn practical ways to stay zen during pregnancy and labour. You’ll thank me when those contractions start rolling in!
5. Reframe “Unexpected” as “Adaptable”
Language matters. Instead of seeing a change in your birth plan as a failure, think of it as an opportunity to adapt and grow. Your journey to motherhood is just beginning, and this is one of many moments where your resilience will shine.
