So, you're nearing the end of pregnancy, and every twinge has you wondering, Is this it?! You’re not alone! The final stretch can be a mix of excitement, nerves, and Googling every little sensation. But don’t worry, bestie, I’ve got you. As a birth educator who’s guided hundreds of mums through this journey, I’m here to break down the real signs of labour (and what’s just your body gearing up) so you can feel confident and ready when the big moment arrives.

The Early Signs of Labour

Labour isn’t always like the movies—no dramatic water-breaking in the supermarket (although, how iconic would that be?!). Instead, your body gives you subtle hints that things are starting to shift. Here’s what to look out for:

1. Your Baby Drops (a.k.a. Lightening)

If you feel like you can finally take a deep breath again, your little one might have moved further down into your pelvis. This can happen weeks before labour or just hours before. It’s a sign that your body is getting into position for birth!

2. Increased Braxton Hicks Contractions

Braxton Hicks (a.k.a. practice contractions) might start happening more often. The key difference? Real contractions get stronger, longer, and closer together. Braxton Hicks are more like a dress rehearsal—annoying but not the main event.

3. The ‘Bloody Show’ & Mucus Plug

Sounds gross, I know, but the mucus plug is a thick gel-like substance that seals your cervix during pregnancy. If you notice a pink, brown, or blood-tinged discharge, your cervix is getting ready for action.

4. Nesting Energy Surge

Suddenly feel like scrubbing the entire house at 3 AM? That’s nesting! Some mums get a burst of energy right before labour kicks in, so if you’re rearranging your kitchen cupboards for the third time this week—take it as a sign.

When Labour is Really Happening

Okay, so you’ve had some hints that things are gearing up—but how do you know it’s go-time? Here’s when to start paying attention:

5. Regular, Strong Contractions

The golden rule: if contractions are getting closer together, lasting longer, and feeling more intense—it’s happening! Use the 5-1-1 rule: contractions every 5 minutes, lasting 1 minute, for 1 hour. That’s a sign you should call your midwife or head to the hospital.

6. Water Breaking

Despite what Hollywood says, your water breaking might not be a huge gush—it can be a slow trickle. If it happens, note the color and call your midwife. Clear fluid? All good! Greenish or brown? Call your care provider immediately.

7. Intense Back Pain or Pressure

Some women feel labour mostly in their back, especially if baby is in a posterior position (facing your tummy). If the pain is steady and increasing—yep, it’s happening.

8. You Just Know

Some women describe an instinctive feeling that birth is near—your body is wise, and if you feel it’s time, trust yourself!

When to Call Your Midwife or Head to the Hospital

Not sure when to go in? Here’s when you definitely shouldn’t wait:

  • Your water breaks and the fluid is not clear.

  • You’re experiencing heavy bleeding.

  • You have severe, constant pain (not just contractions).

  • Baby’s movements slow down significantly.

  • You feel like you need to push (especially if you’re not at the hospital yet!).
