Newborn Sleep Secrets: How to Gently Start a Routine From Day One! By Donna, Antenatal Classes Auckland

If you’re anything like most new parents, the words “newborn sleep” might already have you googling at 3am, half-asleep with a baby on your chest. So first—take a deep breath, make yourself a cuppa, and know this: you’re not doing anything wrong. Newborn sleep can feel like a beautiful mess. And guess what? That’s totally normal.
But here's the good news—you can start to gently shape a sleep routine right from the beginning. Not a strict schedule, not sleep training, but simple, loving foundations that help your baby feel secure and help you get a few more precious minutes of rest.
☁️ Understand What’s Normal First
Newborns don’t know the difference between night and day—at least not yet. Their sleep is all over the place in those first weeks because their circadian rhythm (that internal body clock) hasn’t kicked in yet.
What to expect:
14–17 hours of sleep in 24 hours
Waking every 2–3 hours to feed
Sleep often broken into short bursts
You are not failing if your baby doesn’t “sleep through the night” (that phrase is the ultimate myth, by the way!). What matters more is finding your groove and building sleep cues into your day.
🌙 Create Gentle Day vs Night Cues
In the womb, it was always dark and cozy. Now? Bright lights, noises, and all sorts of stimulation. Helping baby adjust to the outside world starts with showing them the difference between day and night.
During the day:
Open the curtains wide
Go for a walk outside
Keep noise levels normal
Chat to your baby, play soft music
At night:
Keep things dim and quiet
Use a soft voice for feeds
Avoid eye contact during night wake-ups (I know, it’s hard when they’re so cute!)
These small shifts help teach your baby that nighttime is for rest.
💫 Start a Simple Bedtime Routine
Even newborns love routine—it helps them feel safe and settled.
Your bedtime routine doesn’t have to be fancy. A consistent, calming pattern will do wonders:
Warm bath
Gentle baby massage
Dim the lights
Feed, cuddle, and lullabies
Swaddle (if baby likes it)
Place in bassinet drowsy but awake (when you’re ready to try)
You can start this from week one—it’s not about “perfect” sleep, but about creating familiar cues that signal it’s time to wind down.
🤱 Follow Baby’s Lead
Here’s something I say in every one of my antenatal classes in Auckland: You don’t need to get it perfect. You just need to get to know your baby.
Watch for sleepy cues (yawning, rubbing eyes, zoning out) and try not to wait until baby is overtired (hello, meltdown). Those little signals are gold when it comes to creating a gentle rhythm.
💤 You Deserve Rest Too
Yes, this blog is about your baby—but you matter, too. A rested mum is better able to care, respond, and cope. So lean on your partner, family, or postnatal village if you have one. Nap when you can. Let go of the pressure to “do it all.” You’re in the trenches right now, but it won’t last forever.
