Your due date may be ingrained in your soul, but does it really mean that much?
How likely is it your baby will be born on your due date? Well its less than 5% of babies arrive on their due date!!!!
It's so important to understand this date as it can be a real source of stress in late pregnancy.
Most women will tell you the most frustrating part of pregnancy is probably the ‘due date’ wait. To be given a date of when to expect to be holding your baby in your arms, is asking for stress levels to rise and frustration to build! Imagine being told you’ll win the lottery on the 1st March, to then wake up and realise it ain’t happening. All of that excitement to get to this one date, and it came and went with no prize!
What we need to remember is that these ‘dates’ are based on every woman having 28 day cycles and conceiving their baby on the 14th day of that cycle. It’s also assuming that all women have the exact same length of pregnancies and all babies are ready on the exact day too. Basically, it’s an estimate. A educated guess. A study in the 90's found that that first time mums are more likely to go on average 8 days beyond their estimated due date!! For labour to start remember, our minds and our bodies need to feel calm, happy, safe and relaxed. Spend time doing things that make you feel wonderful - watching your wedding video, browsing old photos, going to your favourite restaurant, watching your favourite film... if your body sense stress of any kind (even too much excitement), it’ll keep your baby in longer! Our pregnancy relaxation courses are perfect to get your mind & body relaxed.
